Required CE Hours

Producers (Including Combined License & Adjusters)

24 CE hours*, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2-year license term (see license term below).
*See Special Training/Education Requirements below.

Title Agents

24 CE hours, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2-year license term (see license term below).

Service Representatives

12 CE hours, including 2 hours in ethics, are required every 2-year license term (see license term below). 

A Service Representative is defined as “any producer or service representative employed by another producer or by an insurer to work only in the office of the employer and who are not licensed as a non-resident in any other state.”

Special Training/Education Requirements

Annuity

  • Effective January 1, 2017, roducers who hold a life line of authority must complete a one-time 4 hour annuity training course before July 1, 2017, while producers and brokers licensed after that date must complete the course before representing annuities.

Flood Insurance

  • Producers who write flood insurance must complete a one-time 3-hour training class on flood insurance and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Long-Term Care (LTC)

  • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in Alabama, producers must complete an initial 8-hour NAIC LTC training course approved in any state.
  • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: After completing the 8-hour initial training requirement, producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training every 24-month period following the completion of the initial training and every 24-months thereafter.
Non-Resident CE Requirements

Non-resident Producers: Producers selling certain products may have specialized training or education requirements as described below.

Non-resident Adjusters: Non-resident adjusters who satisfy the adjuster requirement in their resident state or designated home state will be deemed compliant for the Alabama adjuster requirement.

Special Training/Education Requirements

Long-Term Care (LTC)

  • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in Alabama, nonresident producers must complete an initial 8-hour, NAIC LTC training course approved in any licensed state.
  • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: After completing the 8-hour initial training requirement, nonresident producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training every 24-month period following the initial training and every 24 months thereafter. 
License Term

The license term ends on the last day of the producer’s birth month, every 2 years.
Even birth years renew every even year.
Odd birth years renew every odd year.

Course Repetition Rules

Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in a 2-year compliance period.

CE Carryover Allowance

No CE carryover hours in excess of the required 24 or 12 total hours will be allowed. (effective 2013)

CE Exemptions

The following are exempt from Alabama CE requirements:

  • Non-residents of reciprocal states who have met the home state's CE requirements.
  • Any producer whose license is limited to acting only as a producer for credit insurance, rental vehicle insurance, crop, portable electronic, travel, motor club, dental services, and legal services, or any combination thereof.
  • Newly licensed producers, service representatives, adjusters or title insurance agents licensed within 12 months of the renewal date.

Note: Producers who are exempt from CE will still be required to complete LTC training.  The Federal Law will not allow exemptions for LTC. 

Final Exam Requirements

Exam Proctor Requirements

Self-study final exams must be monitored by a disinterested third party. Proctors may not serve for examinations of family members, relatives, or dependents; employers or supervisors; employees or subordinates; co-workers; current or former teachers or pupils; personal friends, or significant others; or for anyone in whom the monitor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination. Proctors that can be approved by the Department are professionals such as an attorney, minister, accountant, librarian, or a teacher from a local high school or college.

Exam Rules

Self-study final exams are closed book. Producers may not refer to the course material while the exam is in progress. The final exam must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

Roster Fees

Alabama's CE vendor, SBS, charges an additional fee of $1 per credit hour for us to electronically upload course completions directly to your CE transcript.
