Required CE Hours

Producers

24 CE hours*, including 3 hours of ethics, are required every 2-year license term.

Special Training/Education Requirements

Annuity Training

  • Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products, producers must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours.

Note: Residents who satisfy the training requirements of another state that are similar to the Washington law will be deemed compliant for the Washington requirement.

Long-Term Care (LTC)

  • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products, producers must complete an initial 8-hour, state-approved LTC training course. Producers may take any 8-hr NAIC approved LTC course for use in any licensed state.
  • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: From the date of completing the 8-hour initial training requirement, producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training every 24 months thereafter. Producers may take any 4-hr NAIC approved LTC course for use in any licensed state.

Flood Insurance

All Washington producers who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time, 3-hour course approved for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Non-Resident CE Requirements

Non-residents do not have to meet Washington’s CE requirements to renew their Washington state license. However, there are some education requirements for transacting insurance business in the following product categories:

Special Training/Education Requirements

Annuity Training

  • Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products, producers must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours.

Note: Nonresidents who satisfy the training requirements of another state that are similar to the Washington law will be deemed compliant for the Washington requirement.


Long-Term Care (LTC)

Flood Insurance

All Washington producers who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time 3-hour course approved for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Nonresident producers may take any 3-hr approved NFIP course for use in any licensed state.

License Term

The license term is every 2 years, based on the producer’s date of birth.   

Course Repetition Rules

A course may not be taken for credit more than once within 3 calendar years from the original completion date.

Note: Course numbers for LTC and annuity courses are the same for all providers. The initial 8-hour LTC course and annuity training course will be considered duplicates if repeated within the 3-year period.  The 4-hour LTC course is exempt from the repetition rule.

CE Carryover Allowance

Excess credits cannot be carried over from one renewal cycle to the next.

CE Exemptions

Resident adjusters and producers holding only limited credit insurance, travel insurance, or surety licenses are exempt from CE requirements.

Final Exam Requirements

Exam proctor requirements

Self-study final exams do not require a monitor.

Exam rules

Self-study final exams are open book. Licensees may refer to the course material as often as needed. The final exam must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
