Connecticut Insurance Department Transitioning to SBS

The Connecticut Insurance Department has announced that it wil be moving to State Based Systems (SBS) effective Tuesday, November 9, 2021. These important changes will impact your insurance license:

  • All active companies will have a Connecticut Company Number. NAIC Company Numbers (NAIC CoCode) will remain the same.
  • License numbers for all Connecticut individual insurance licensees will change to their National Producer Number (NPN).
  • All licensees requiring Continuing Education (CE) when renewing their Connecticut insurance license must be CE Compliant before submitting their renewal application.

National Producer Number

The National Producer Number (NPN) is a unique identifier assigned to each licensed producer during the National Association of Insurance Commissioner’s (NAIC’s) licensing application process. All insurance licensees have an NPN. Starting with the transition to SBS, all Connecticut licensees will now use their NPN exclusively as their license number. Previous license numbers issued by the Connecticut Insurance Department will no longer be valid. If you do not know your NPN, you can look it up here: https://nipr.com/help/look-up-your-npn

Transcript Lookup

Before renewing an insurance license, producers should check their transcript to ensure all insurance continuing education requirements are met. Producers can use the“Print Education Transcript Button”at SBS to review their CE requirements and compliance status. Education providers must post course completions within 15 days of successful completion of a Connecticut Insurance Department approved continuing education program. To verify that your credits are showing on your transcript, visit: https://sbs.naic.org/solar-external-lookup/license-manager

Continuing Education (CE)

The Connecticut Insurance Department requires that each licensed producer complete 24 continuing education credit hours, including 3 hours of ethics/law/regulation. Each licensed producer must complete their continuing education requirements every 2 year license term. Of the total 24 hour requirement, 6 of the total hours must pertain directly to the license line of authority.

Check out our approved continuing education courses that will meet these requirements in our Connecticut catalog of online training at InsuranceStudy.
