New York Approved Monitor Requirement Eliminated

New York has eliminated the NY Approved Monitor Requirement for self-study and online insurance continuing education. On November 2, 2020, the New York DFS decided to eliminate the requirement for a New York approved monitor be present for online and self-study insurance continuing education exams. As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, the rule for an exam monitor was temporarily suspended. This new ruling makes that suspension permanent.

Previously, when an insurance producer took an exam at the conclusion of a continuing education course, they were required to have present a New York approved monitor. The monitor had to file an application and be approved by the New York Department of Financial Services. Monitors often charged a fee for their services.

Insurance producers should find this new flexibility freeing as they can now complete their continuing education without have to locate or pay for a monitor. This change is expected to increase the number of insurance CE courses completed in NY in online and self-study methods. This benefits the industry and consumers when insurance producers can easily access relevant and current education.

Insurance producers are still required to take an exam at the conclusion of their online or self-study course. The exam must have a minimum of 50 questions.
