Montana Insurance Continuing Education Updates

The Montana Commission of Securities and Insurance has just announced updates to continuing education requirements in the state of Montana. Effective October 21, 2023 the requirement for proctored CE course examinations is eliminated. Online CE coursework just became that much easier!

Read on for more changes announced by Montana CSI this week.

  • Effective May 1, 2023: Montana CSI partnered with Pearson VUE to review new and renewal CE course applications for Montana.
  • Effective October 1, 2023: House Bill 61 eliminated the Montana Continuing Education Advisory Council.
  • Effective October 21, 2023: Revisions to administrative rules covering the continuing education program were adopted. These changes deleted references to the Continuing Education Advisory Council and eliminated the requirement for proctored CE course examinations.
  • Effective November 1, 2023: Montana CE providers will now be able to submit a single course application when filing courses for both a classroom and webinar method of delivery.

    Continuing education is a requirement for all resident and non-resident insurance producers, adjusters, and consultants licensed in Montana. Insurance CE must be completed every 2 years in order for a producer to maintain their license.

    CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS BY LINE OF INSURANCE

    Persons licensed as a producer for any of the lines of property, casualty, surety, title, life, health, disability, or as an adjuster or consultant:

    • Must complete 24 approved credit hours by the license lapse/renewal date each biennial.
    • Must include a minimum of 1 approved credit hour of legislative changes in Montana insurance statutes and administrative rules as part of each biennial continuing education filing.
    • Must include a minimum of 3 approved credit hours of ethics as part of each biennial continuing education filing.

    Persons licensed to sell only limited lines credit insurance (credit life and credit disability, involuntary unemployment insurance, GAP or other credit insurance), prepaid legal insurance, or surety bail bonds:

    • Must complete 5 approved credit hours by the license lapse/renewal date each biennial.
    • Must include a minimum of 1 approved credit hour of legislative changes in Montana insurance statutes and administrative rules as part of each biennial continuing education filing.
    • The remaining credit hours must be in the areas of insurance law, ethics, or topics specific to surety bail bonds, prepaid legal insurance, or limited lines credit insurance.

    Producers selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuities: 

    • Must complete a one-time, 4 credit training course approved by the CSI and provided by a CSI-approved education provider.

    Licensed insurance producers selling flood insurance policies:

    • Must complete a one-time, 3 hour course, approved for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) training.

    Producers selling, soliciting, or negotiating long-term care: 

    • Prior to the sale of LTC, the producer must complete a one-time training course not less than 8 hours
    • The producer must maintain their LTC compliance by completing ongoing training not less than 4 hours for each 24-month period after their initial 8 hour completion.

    Viatical settlement brokers: 

    • Must complete continuing education in the subjects of life insurance, viaticals and/or ethics.

    Non-resident adjusters who live in a state with no continuing education requirements:

    • Must complete 24 hours of continuing education.
    • When the producer’s resident state does not require continuing education,
      • the producer must complete Montana CE, or
      • they may designate a different non-resident state to track their CE completions.
