FTC Shuts Down Complicated Cancellations
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is putting an end to complicated cancellation processes for goods and services after receiving more than 16,000 public comments demanding change.
Too many businesses make it easy to sign up but hard to cancel, forcing consumers to navigate endless web pages, wait on hold, live chat with agents, or even email signed documents just to stop a service. Consumers made it clear: canceling should be just as simple as signing up.
Under the new rule — which takes effect 180 days after its publication in the Federal Register — the FTC is cracking down on companies that:
- Misrepresent material facts while marketing goods or services with a negative option feature;
- Fail to clearly disclose key terms before collecting billing information;
- Charge consumers without first obtaining their express, informed consent; and
- Make cancellation unnecessarily difficult or delay stopping charges.
This final rule builds on the FTC’s ongoing review of the 1973 Negative Option Rule, strengthening protections against unfair and deceptive subscription practices that have exploded in today’s digital economy.
