Required CE Hours

Producers

24 CE hours*, including 3 hours in ethics, are required every 2-year license term.

Special Training/Education Requirements

Category Restrictions

Producers who hold a dual property and casualty license and a life, accident, and health license must complete at least 8 of the required 24 CE hours in courses related to each of these lines of authority.

Long-Term Care (LTC)

  • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling LTC insurance products in South Carolina, producers must complete an initial 8-hour LTC training course
  • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: After completing the initial 8-hour training requirement, LTC producers must complete 4 hours of LTC training every 24 months from the initial 8 hour course completion date.

Annuity Training Requirement

Effective September 25, 2011:  All producers currently licensed to sell, solicit, and negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours by March 25, 2012.  All producers licensed on or after September 25, 2011 must complete this training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating such products.

Flood Insurance

All South Carolina producers who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3 hour course relating to National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) training.

Non-Resident CE Requirements

Nonresident producers who meet the CE requirements of their home states do not have to comply with South Carolina CE requirements.  Nonresident producers who have not completed a Long-Term Care Partnership training course in their home state or another state with a Long-Term Care Partnership training requirement are required to take the South Carolina Long-Term Care Partnership training course.

  • *Effective September 25, 2011:  All producers currently licensed to sell, solicit, and negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours by March 25, 2012.  All producers licensed on or after September 25, 2011 must complete this training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating such products.  *Nonresidents who satisfy the training requirements of another state that are similar to South Carolina's law will be deemed compliant for South Carolina's requirement.  
License Term

The license term is the last day of the licensee's birth month, by 5pm eastern, every odd-or-even year based on the year the licensee was born.

Course Repetition Rules

A course may not be repeated within 2 calendar years of the original completion date.

CE Carryover Allowance

Producers may carry over a maximum of 18 credit hours to the next license renewal period. Excess hours of an ethics course will be carried over as general credit. Courses carried forward will count as a duplicate if completed again in the current renewal cycle.

CE Exemptions

No new exemption requests will be honored. Producers that were granted an exemption prior to January 1, 2010 will remain exempt*. However, exempt producers that add a new line of authority or allow their license to become inactive will lose their exemption status and will be required to comply with all CE requirements.

*Producers that received a reduction in hours by December 31, 2009 will only have to complete 15 hours of CE biennially by the last day of their birth month/year. Three-hours must be in Ethics. Producers with reduced compliance and hold multi-lines must complete 6 hours in Property & Casualty, 6 hours in Life, Accident and Health and 3 hours of Ethics. 

Final Exam Requirements

Exam proctor requirements

Self-study final exams do require a monitor. Monitors must be a Disinterested Third Party and shall NOT serve for examinations of: family members or relatives or dependents, employers or supervisors, or for anyone in whom the proctor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.

Exam rules

Self-study final exams are closed book. Students may not refer to the course material while the exam is in progress. The final exam must be passed with a score of 70 percent or higher to receive credit. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.

What do the Version A and Version B mean? LTC renewal training must be completed every 2 years. Most states will not allow the same CE course to be repeated during a single compliance period or the subsequent compliance period. We strongly advise that you alternate between the online versions in order to ensure you can earn CE credit towards your license renewal.
